1,4-Butanediol (BDO for short) is a colorless oily liquid, flammable and miscible with water. BDO is an important organic and fine chemical raw material, which is widely used in the fields of medicine, chemical industry, textile, papermaking, automobile and daily chemical industry. BDO can produce polybutylene terephthalate (PBT)tetrahydrofuran (THF), polyurethane resin (PU Resin) , γ-butyrolactone (GBL) and tetrahydrofuran (THF), coatings and plasticizers, etc., as well as solvents and electroplating industry extenders, etc. Among them, THF is dehydrated and mixed to produce polymethylene glycol (PTMEG), and PTMEG is the basic raw material for synthesizing spandex, polyether elastomer and thermoplastic polyurethane. In addition, BDO can also be used in the preparation of vitamin B6, adipic acid, acetal and 1,3-butadiene, as an intermediate in the production of pharmaceuticals and pesticides, as a solvent, coating resin, moisturizing agent, softener, Chain extenders and crosslinkers, etc. Therefore, BDO is widely used in the fields of medicine, textile, chemical industry, papermaking, automobile and daily chemical industry.

Method for synthesis of 1, 4-butanediol
N-butane/maleic anhydride method
At present, there are two methods to produce BDO from maleic anhydride: esterification hydrogenation and direct hydrogenation of maleic anhydride.
The process of esterification and hydrogenation of maleic anhydride was developed by Davy Company in the United Kingdom. It is divided into three steps: After the esterification reaction between methanol and maleic anhydride to produce diethyl butenediate, BDO is prepared through hydrogenation and hydrolysis. The process is low temperature and low pressure reaction, equipment material requirements are not high, can save investment, and the use of non-precious metals as catalyst, catalyst life is long, high conversion rate, and can produce THF and GBL. The key to the success of the project is the implementation of the finished resources and the selling price. If other raw materials are used to produce maleic anhydride, the production cost of BDO will be increased.
Direct hydrogenation of maleic anhydride is a production method that combines the gas phase oxidation of n-butane to maleic anhydride with the hydrogenation of maleic anhydride. In this process, n-butane was oxidized to produce maleic anhydride under a mixed vanadium and phosphorus oxide catalyst, and then MA cooled by water was added, followed by catalytic hydrogenation to BDO in a fixed-bed reactor. Compared with other processes, dehydration, purification and esterification of maleic anhydride were omitted. The main process is reduced from 8 to 4, which shortens the process and reduces the investment in equipment.
